Use Xylitol To Cure Tooth Decay

Xylitol is one of the latest natural cure for tooth decay and gum disease. Xylitol is widely recognized as means to fight dental cavities and this is confirmed after 25 years of testing in different conditions. So what is Xylitol? It is a natural sweetener found in a variety of fruits and vegetables. It is commonly extracted from birch bark and is used as a substitute for sugar.

Bacteria in the mouth feed on the sugars we eat, giving them energy and they start to muliply. In the process, they release acids that erodes the tooth enamel. This causes tooth decay and cavities begin to form. Unlike sugar, Xylitol does not break down and as such the bacteria in the mouth are unable to digest it. Thus their growth is greatly reduced as much as 90% . Xylitol also prevents the bacteria from sticking on the tooth surface and therefore the amount of plaque formation is greatly reduced.

Xylitol is also used as a means of natural tooth repair. Taking xylitol helps increasing saliva flow which is important of the repair of tooth enamel. Studies have shown that frequent use of xylitol will repair tooth cavities, slow down demineralization and helps the remineralization of teeth.
When xylitol slows down demineralization, it helps to prevent tooth decay.

Chewing gums and candies made with xylitol as sweetener have already been endorsed by some dental associations in Amercia. Xylitol is now widely available in the form of candy, mints and chewing gums and in granules as a bulk sweetner. It is also found in toothpaste, mouthwash and floss.

Studies show that to be very effective one need to take 4 to 12 grams of xylitol every day. It may not be effective if used only once a day or occasionally, regardless of the amount.

Studies have shown that taking xylitol three to five times daily helps prevent dental caries.

For effectiveness of preventing tooth-decay, it is advisable to take Xylitol mint, chewing gum or candy after each meal and to use Xylitol toothpaste and mouthwash twice a day.
